How To Identify Veins And Arteries

.

Arteries and veins are alike but are different. I can tell that 60% of people don't know what is called an artery (singular form of arteries), but are more familiar with vein.

The truth is, we can't just rush to the differences of both terms without taking a view of what they actually mean. Thus, we have to know what they are.

What is an Artery?

An artery is a thick, elastic and muscular wall which carries oxygenated blood away from the heart.
Note:The combined word "oxygenated blood" as used above means the combination of blood and oxygen. That is, the mixed with oxygen with have breath in.

What is Vein?

Vein is a thin, less muscular and less elastic wall which carries deoxygenated blood towards the heart.
Note:The combined word "deoxygenated blood" means blood without oxygen in it.

Having read what artery and vein meant, let's not much time to their differences. Enjoy!!!

Seven Major Differences Between Arteries And Veins

ArteriesVeins
1. Thick, elastic and muscular wallsThin, less muscular and less elastic walls
2. Carry blood away from the heartCarry blood towards the heart
3. Carry oxygenated blood except pulmonary arteryCarry deoxygenated blood except pulmonary vein
4. Bright red in colourDull red in colour
5. Flow with high pressure i.e bloodBlood in veins flow in low pressure
6. Do not posses valvesPosses valves to prevent the backward flow of blood
7. Pulses are readily detectable in arteries Pulses are not readily detectable in veins

Important Tips To Notice About Typhoid Fever

Typhoid (also known as enteric fever) is a contagious bacterial infection that affects several organs in the body. Typhoid is typically spread through contact with infected urine and faeces. When typhoid is not treated, it can lead to complications or death.

Typhoid is caused by the Salmonella typhi and paratyphi bacteria that is present in urine and faeces. This highly contagious infection is easily transmitted from person to person through contaminated drink and food.

In most cases the incubation period of Typhoid is 7 to 12 days, it can sometimes take up to 20 days before symptoms become pronounced.

Besides featuring prominently as a public health problem in West Africa, Typhoid and malaria have some symptoms in common.

This makes knowing the symptoms and prevention of typhoid very essential in poor sanitation and hygiene places.

Symptoms of typhoid

  • Loss of appetite
  • High fevers
  • Rashes on the chest and abdomen
  • Constipation or diarrhoea (bloody stools in rare cases)
  • Head and body aches
  • Severe fatigue
  • Sweating
  • Weakness and/or lethargy

Prevention of Typhoid

While vaccines are only partially effective, they are usually administered to people in Typhoid prone areas or people travelling to areas where typhoid fever is common.
Below are some health tips for preventing typhoid.

1. Wash your hands properly
  • After changing a baby’s nappy
  • After taking care of sick people
  • After using the toilet
  • After working in the garden
  • Before and after handling food
2. Avoid drinking untreated water

If you are visiting a place with a possibly contaminated water source, drink only bottled water.

3. Avoid raw vegetables and fruits

Vegetables like lettuce and cabbage are good vehicles of this bacteria because of their ability to retain contaminated water even when washed with clean water.

When you visit places with poor sanitation, it is best you cross raw food off your menu.

4. Buy hot foods

When eating out, avoid food that is served at room temperature, instead go for hot meals.

Stop Using Straw While Drinking Drinks. It Is Dangerous!!!

By 2050, there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Do you want to do something to stop it? By Greta Alvarez.

plastic straws

1. Some materials can still be toxic

Some plastic straws are still being made with materials that are potentially toxic or carcinogenic. And even if straws are labeled as “BPA-free” they might still contain the chemical.

2. Plastic is not biodegradable

And even though many disposable straws are made from recyclable materials, they can be difficult to recycle. According to the Strawless Ocean in the US, plastic straws are too lightweight for recycling sorters and drop through sorting screens and end up in landfills. (And that’s only if someone bothers putting them in the recycling bin to begin with.)

Plastic can remain in the environment for over 2 000 years because (most) plastic is not biodegradable. So that beverage that took you 15 minutes to drink will linger in the environment for generations.

In fact, it’s likely that every straw you’ve ever used in your life still exists in the environment somewhere. It just degrades until its microscopic. Even burning it creates harmful dioxin emissions that are bad for your health and the environment.

3. Straws pollute the ocean

And for several different reasons, straws frequently end up in the ocean because they’re littered on the beach, blown out of trashcans, or washed down storm drains, among other reasons. Studies predict that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight. Because of their small size, aquatic animals can confuse bits of plastic for food and choke on them.

4. People can get hurt

Thousands of people end up in the ER each year because of straw-related injuries. We’re talking contusions, abrasions, mouth injuries, eye injuries…

5. Straws are wasteful

An average person will go through 38 000 straws in 60 years. Which means that five hundred million straws are used every day. And that’s just in the United States of America. No wonder a hundred thousand sea animals and a million birds die each year due to plastic consumption.

What can we do?
To make a change, it’s as simple as asking to not get a straw with your beverage when you order one. It may not feel like you can save the planet on your own, but little habits like this help raise awareness and your influence can easily spread. One small gesture can have a huge impact. Hopefully you have enough facts now to defend your decision.

And spread the word! If someone notices that you’re not using a straw, let them know why. And for many people, ditching plastic straws will not affect their quality of life. Of course, there are exceptions, and some people need straws. But for everyone who can live without them, imagine the impact it’d have on the environment if we all stopped using them.

And if you’re not ready to give up on straws entirely, there are tons of options for reusable straws out there. Bamboo, stainless steel, paper, silicone, treated glass, etc. To sum up, if you want the future to be healthier, now is the time to give up on disposable straws forever. And tell your friends to do the same.

How To Prevent Malaria Fever

Malaria is a major public health concern in Africa because hundreds of thousands of people still die from it every year, with pregnant women, children under 5 years of age and those living with HIV/AIDs being the most affected groups.

In addition, malaria in pregnancy contributes to pregnant women developing complications like miscarriage, stillbirth, giving birth prematurely, anaemia in the woman (her blood drops to a dangerously low level)
Below are 5 ways you can prevent malaria

1. Proper Use of Insecticide-Treated Nets

Insecticide-treated nets, when used correctly, prevents the mosquito carrying the malaria-causing parasite from coming in contact with your body. Long-lasting insecticide-treated nets are distributed free of charge to pregnant women and new nursing mothers in many health centres in Nigeria and many other African countries.

2. Assess the malaria risks when traveling - Get an antimalarial ( when necessary)

A lot of people report getting malaria during a trip. Whenever you are visiting an area with a high risk of contracting malaria.

Some preventative medications might need to be taken up to two risks before traveling. While others can be taken on arrival.

Please consult a doctor about preventative medications before visiting a high-risk area.

3. Indoor Residual Spraying

This is the application of an effective insecticide to the inside of houses, on the walls and other surfaces that can serve as a resting place for mosquitoes carrying the malaria-causing parasite.

This malaria prevention method is not common, but it has been shown to be very effective. Once sprayed, it can last for about 6 months, during which mosquitoes that rest on the sprayed surfaces will die. When combined with the use of insecticide-treated nets, this malaria prevention method is very effective.

4. Go for long sleeves

Avoid wearing short clothing in the evening and at night. Wearing long sleeve shirts and trousers reduces the area of skin exposed. Travellers to mosquito-prone areas can also treat their clothes with permethrin in order to increase protection.

5. Proper Treatment of Malaria

While preventing contact with mosquitoes carrying the malaria-causing parasite is the best way to tackle malaria, effective treatment is very important for those who get bitten by these mosquitoes and come down with malaria.

Many people stop taking their anti-malarial medication once the symptoms disappear because they feel they have recovered and there is no need to complete the drugs. This is wrong and dangerous because it can lead to drug resistance.

How To Prevent High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) is the health condition of having blood pressure readings above 140/90 mmHg, over a number of weeks. High blood pressure is a major health risk because it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels.

People with high blood pressure are susceptible to stroke, kidney diseases and heart failure. It is popularly called the silent killer for good reason; high blood pressure gives no direct signs or symptoms.

Diet and stress are the main precursors of high blood pressure. People with unhealthy eating habits and stressful lifestyles are advised to check their blood pressure monthly.

Besides serving as a reminder to live healthy, frequent blood pressure checks can help you detect this health condition, so you can take steps to lowering it.
Here are some simple tips for controlling blood pressure:

1. Lose some weight

Blood pressure often increases with body mass index. Being overweight disrupts breathing while sleeping (sleep apnea) in some, this further raises blood pressure.

Weight loss is an effective lifestyle change for controlling blood pressure.

2. Exercising regularly

Frequent physical activity for 30 minutes on most days of the week has be proven to lower blood pressure by 4-9 mm HG. Consistency is important for people diagnosed with high blood pressure, stopping may lead to a relapse. Cycling, jogging, walking, dancing and walking are some of the best types of exercise for lowering blood pressure.

3. Eat a healthy diet

A change in the diet is recommended by physicians advising on lowering high blood pressure. Consume more whole grain meals, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products. Salt and high blood pressure are not good friends. Cut salt from your meals gradually and substitute with natural spices to reduce blood pressure. Reduce the size of your meal portions; eat foods low in cholesterol and saturated fats.

4. Quit smoking, decrease alcohol intake, and reduce caffeine consumption

Regulate habits like smoking, alcohol consumption, soft drinks and caffeine intake. Smoking is a habit that must go; nicotine increases the blood pressure, heart rate, narrows your artilleries and makes your blood more likely to clot (this sets you up for an heart attack or stroke).

5. Reduce your stress

Chronic stress is a top contributor to high blood pressure. Try to figure out what causes your stress. Try organizing possible causes, such as family, work, illness and finance. Once you determine what causes your stress, start considering how to eliminate them.

6. Potassium rich food

Eating potassium rich fruit and vegetable helps in lowering blood pressure. Tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, beans, peas and dried fruits such as resins are rich sources of potassium.

Having Chest Pain? It Might Result To Heart Attack Or HeartBurn

Most of us have experienced minor chest pain at one time or the other. People who have severe chest pain sometimes wonder if it's serious like a heart attack or something that would go away with time.

Chest pain occurs in the upper body, from the jaw down to the ribs. Common probable causes of chest pain include panic disorders and heartburn; acid reflux.

A heartburn can simply be cleared up with an antacid while a heart attack is a health emergency that can cost you your life.

People having a heart attack usually have one or two symptoms that suddenly progress within 10 minutes ( this makes quickly identifying a heart attack very important).

It is safe to consider heart attack if you have chest pain and other symptoms that are associated with having a heart attack.

While some symptoms of heartburn and heart attack might be similar, the outcomes differ.

Below are symptoms of heartburn and heart attack to help you make a safe choice
Besides chest pain, heart attack symptoms can also include:

  • Pain that extends from the chest to the neck, jaw, shoulders or arms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating profusely
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Upper abdominal discomfort
  • Dizziness (associated with fast or irregular heart rate)
  • Vomiting or nausea

Anyone with the symptoms listed above needs to be evaluated by a health-care professional as soon as possible.
On the other hand heartburn symptoms besides chest pain include:

  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • A sour taste in the mouth

See Reason Why Some Individuals Have Small Head

As human begin, you can't sit for all day long without taking a walk. During this walk, you see a lot of things strange or mysterious. They say, The more you go, the more you see. Thus, you see some children with smaller heads
Some says "it is normal" while others say "that is how they were created" but both ideas are wrong. Did you know that small headed people are suffering from MICROCEPHALY? yes, they are.

What is Microcephaly?

Microcephaly (my-kroh-SEF-uh-lee) is a rare neurological condition in which an infant's head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age and sex. Sometimes detected at birth, microcephaly usually is the result of the brain developing abnormally in the womb or not growing as it should after birth.
Microcephaly can be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Children with microcephaly often have developmental issues. Generally there's no treatment for microcephaly, but early intervention with supportive therapies, such as speech and occupational therapies, may help enhance your child's development and improve quality of life.

Symptoms of Microcephaly

As expected, the sign is the head size significantly smaller than that of other children of the same age and sex.
A child with more severe microcephaly may also have a backward-sloping forehead.

Causes of Microcephaly

Microcephaly usually is the result of abnormal brain development, which canoccur in the womb (congenital) or during infancy.
Microcephaly may be genetic. Hence, if parent suffers small head, one of the children will definitely suffer it too.

Prevention

Chances are your doctor will detect microcephaly at the baby's birth or at a regular well-baby checkup. However, if you think your baby's head is smaller than normal or isn't growing as it should, talk to your doctor.
Learning your child has microcephaly can raise questions about future pregnancies. Work with your doctor to determine the cause of the microcephaly. If the cause is genetic, you and may want to talk to a genetics counselor about the risk of microcephaly in future pregnancies.

Thumb the first finger. It is the biggest of all fingers.

2. Index finger

Index finger is the finger next to the thumb. It is the major finger used to do things. It is given various names according to its operation like Pointer finger, Trigger finger, etc.

3. Middle Finger

As it name implies, middle finger is the finger at the middle. It is the longest finger.

4. Ring Bearer

Ring Bearer is the finger that is almost to the last. Introduction ring and wedding ring are often put in this finger. It is also called Ring Finger

5. Pinky

I really love that name. It is so cute, isn't it? Pinky is the smallest finger and the last finger. It is also called the Little Finger

Note:

Some people have six (6) fingers. The last finger developed is as a result of improper development and it is not normal

Four (4) Test Every Woman Needs To Do

In trying to achieve set goals for ourselves - financial, career, relationship, we sometimes forget the most important aspect our lives - our health - without which we wouldn’t be able to achieve these goals. This is not to send one rushing around for unnecessary tests or searching for the slightest sign of illness but a reminder than regular testing is indeed important.

What Medical Tests Do You Need?

Although, we are all unique people with medical decisions that need to be made individually, having the right guideline and direction is very important. For the purpose of screening tests, here are the top 4 we think are most important!

1. Cervical cancer screening

Cervical cancer screening is used to find changes in the cells of the cervix that could lead to cancer. The cervix is the opening to the uterus and is located at the top of the vagina. There are two types of the screening; the cervical cytology (also called the Pap test or Pap smear) and the human papillomavirus (HPV).

With the Pap test, the lab checks the sample for cancer cells or abnormal cells that could become cancer later. With the HPV test, the lab checks for HPV infection. HPV is a virus that spreads through sexual contact. It can sometimes lead to cancer. If your screening tests are abnormal, your doctor may do more tests, such as a biopsy

Cervical Cancer occurs when cervical cells become abnormal and, over time, grow out of control. The cancer cells invade deeper into the cervical tissue. In advanced cases, cancer cells can spread to other organs of the body.

2. Breast cancer screening

Breast cancer is cancer that develops from breast tissue. Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in breast shape, dimpling of the skin, fluid coming from the nipple, a newly inverted nipple, or a red or scaly patch of skin.

Breast cancer screening means checking a woman’s breasts for cancer before there are signs or symptoms of the disease. Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about which breast cancer screening tests are right for you, and when you should have them.

3. Blood pressure test

For most people, a blood pressure test is a routine part of their medical appointments. Depending on preference, your medical practitioner might order separate appointments for repeat blood pressure checks to look for ongoing health conditions, including elevated blood pressure, high blood pressure (hypertension), low blood pressure (hypotension), heart disease or other conditions.

4. Blood glucose testing

Glucose is a type of sugar and is the body's main source of energy. A blood glucose test is carried out to measure the glucose levels in your blood. A hormone called insulin helps move glucose from your bloodstream into your cells. Too much or too little glucose in the blood can be a sign of a serious medical condition. High blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) may be a sign of diabetes, a disorder that can cause heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and other complications. Low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia) can also lead to major health problems, including brain damage, if not treated.

Healthy Benefits Of Smiling

The power of a smile knows no bound. It can spread happiness, start a friendship and dissolve an argument. Smiling is essential for your health.

So it seems our facial expressions have a greater impact on our lives than you might have thought.

We spend billions of naira yearly on doctor visits, fitness routines, prescriptions and gym memberships. Some people who would spare no expense when it comes to their health seem to disregard smiling. Smiling is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to boost your health.

By choosing to smile even when upset, happy changes start to occur automatically because you have signaled the mind to shift into a brighter mood.

Today is World Smile Day, a celebration of happiness. The World Smile Day encourages us to bring a few more smiles into the world and spread the acts of kindness around the world.

We decided to share with you 5 reasons why you should smile more — especially when you don’t feel like it.

1. It lowers stress

When a person is smiling, the facial muscles and nervous system relax.

This causes the release of endorphins that trigger a positive feeling.

These chemicals released by the brain lower stress levels and improve your mood.

Make a habit of smiling even if you are not feeling happy, endorphins will trick your body into thinking you are.

2. It boosts your immune system

Smiling also encourages the release of serotonin. Just like the effect of endorphins, serotonin is a neurotransmitter that affects mood and wellbeing.

An optimal level of serotonin helps the immune system react quickly and effectively.

3. It helps your heart

You can reduce your risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular problems by smiling more. The endorphins released when you smile increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. People who smile often are less likely to develop heart disease.

4. It could flip a bad Mood

Smiling changes brain chemistry for the better. It is especially helpful to people who are dealing with anxiety and depression.

Besides managing stress, endorphins lift your mood.

5. It makes you age gracefully

People who smile often appear younger by as much as 3 years on average. Long-term studies show that people who smile more often live longer too.

This comes as no surprise to health practitioners who understand the effect of simply smiling on relieving stress and maintaining a healthy heart.

Side Effects Of Zobo Drinks

It reduces the number of oestrogen in your body

This is only the issue for women who have the issue with the menstrual cycle. When you drink hibiscus on a regular basis, it can slow down the process of oestrogen production.

So, if you already have problems with this in your life, then consider staying away from karkade for a while. Besides, you should also remember that women taking birth control pills should stay away from the tea too, because of its specific properties.

Thus, if you have such problem, then opt for some other tea instead of this one and eliminate it from your daily diet at all.

It affects the blood pressure

People suffering from low blood pressure should also stay away from drinking this tea. It is very helpful in case you have hypertension syndrome, as it can easily bring the blood pressure on significant levels. But in case you have low blood pressure, then karkade is not an option for you.

It will make it even lower, and as a result of working together with pills you are taking to prevent this health issues, you can feel even worse. Therefore, watch out and make sure you know this before you consider having sour tea on a daily basis.

It might cause hallucinogenic signs

You might feel light-headed after drinking the zobo drink. The thing is that all the properties combined in it can lead to intoxication. So, if you work as a driver or drive a lot, then having hibiscus tea is not the best idea. Some people even reported getting hallucinogenic signs after drinking it on a regular basis. So, be careful as it can cause serious troubles.

It prevents pregnancy

Some women reported that this kind of drink hadn’t let them get pregnant. It is scientifically proven, but since we know that it can be harmful to your oestrogen levels, it can apparently prevent women getting pregnant.

So, if you are willing to conceive a child, then eliminate karkade from your daily ration. It can not only prevent the pregnancy but (who knows?) might even affect the fetus if you do get pregnant.

It might make you less productive

Given how this tea works in your body, it makes your body slow down a little. And as a result, you do less work in the same amount of time you used too. So, hibiscus tea is great if you need to give your body some rest. But in case you want to stay productive, then you should probably substitute it with some other drink.

It stimulates the menstrual flow
Health benefits of zobo drink
  • It helps cure hypertension syndrome.
  • It is packed with Vitamin C.
  • It prevents early ageing.
  • It helps your liver function properly.
  • It has a number of antibacterial properties.
  • It helps to reduce body temperature (so it can be helpful during hot seasons).
  • It helps lessen the pain during the menstrual period.
  • It can reduce body weight.
  • Finally, it can even treat depression in early stages.

However, it is important to remember that even though it can be helpful in various ways, there are certain disadvantages of karkade one should know about and be careful with.

The scholars say that the properties of hibiscus work in such a way that they stimulate the menstrual cycle. Therefore, if some women have troubles having their period timely, then zobo drink is what they need to fix the problem. However, in other cases, they should stay away from it, as it can prevent the pregnancy and stimulate it at the wrong time. So, be careful with it too.

For some reason, the scholars did no explore the side effects of zobo drink too much. This is all we could find for you. However, these facts may be enough.

Now, as you realise what to expect, you might change your attitude to zobo drink and either drink it more frequently or cut it out of your daily ration it is absolutely up to you! But bear all these factors in mind when considering zobo drink on a daily basis. That’s all for today. Watch the video from the article to learn more about this drink and stay healthy!

The Miracle Of Ugu Leaves

He was very sick and all efforts to revive him proved abortive. The nurses and doctors said the red blood cells in his body had depleted, yet they kept him in their custody. Is he really going to die because he doesn’t seem to be responding to treatment? Lost in thought, a mother sat at the reception, hoping for a miracle that would revive her child.

Feeling empathy towards the mother, one of the nurses approached. ‘Madam, if you don’t mind, can I talk to you briefly?’ She startled the woman who was already lost in thought.

‘It’s been two days since your boy was admitted here and from all indications, he is very short of blood. Apparently, you cannot afford pants of blood but I am definite you can afford vegetable.’ She noted

Surprised at the unwarranted insinuations of the nurse, the woman busted into tears.

The nurse became confused as she was only trying to help. Finally, the woman spoke, ‘So this seems like a joke to you eh? What is the correlation between a sick patient and vegetable? You must think I have the luxury of time to talk’, she responded.

The nurse only smiled heartedly and tried to calm her while also educating her.

‘Actually Madam, I was not trying to make a joke. I am very sure you know Ugu?’ She chipped in.

‘Yes! What about it? She asked curiously.

Happy to oblige, the nurse continued. ‘Do you know that when you wash the leaves and squeeze it, then mix the extract with milk, it serves as a supplement for red blood cells in the body? And that if you do that continuously for few days, it can revive your son in the absence of blood transfusion?’ She asked.

‘So, you mean squeezing Ugu and mixing the extract with milk would restore the red blood cells in my son?’ She questioned.

‘Yes, ma! In fact, it would also make his skin fresh and he would not look pale again.’

Obviously relieved, she asked if she could take her son home. The nurse advised against it but suggested she can go and prepare it while she monitors her son’s status.

Immediately, she rushed home.

Interestingly, there were various plantations in her compound, from vegetables of different kinds to pepper, plantain, banana, sugarcane etc. So she went to the Ugu quarters and cut some leaves, rinsed them and started squeezing. Afterwards, she added milk into a bowl containing the extract from the Ugu leaves.

Everything was set. So she hurried back to the hospital, met with the nurse and administered the Ugu leaves extract mixed with milk to her son. She did this three times before the day ended.

Surprisingly, the following morning, her son was up and bubbling with energy. Not that he had any serious ailment but the injections and drugs he was given worsened his condition since his blood level was low.

Full of smiles, the woman said ‘So, we ended up paying hospital bills when the solution was right within!

Ugu is not only edible when prepared as a vegetable, there are other uses that are beneficial to the body. Also called Fluted pumpkin or pumpkin leaves and scientifically known as Telfairia Occidentalis, this vegetable is one of the nice vegetables that happen to be very low in calories, supplying just 26 Cal per 100g and it is free of saturated fats and cholesterol.

In fact, research shows that when the essential ingredients are very much intact, it has the capacity to increase the red blood cells within a short period of time after consumption. If you want to speed up the increase in the red corpuscles, you can mix it with beverages like malt drinks and milk. It is indeed a natural method to regain blood quickly.

What is more interesting about this vegetable is that aside its ability to grow almost anywhere, it is a very rich source of fibre, minerals, vitamins A, B6, C, protein, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and manganese, anti-oxidants and vitamins, flavonoid poly-phenolic antioxidants like lutein, xanthins and carotenes. When the fresh leaves are sliced and mixed with coconut water and salt, stored in a bottle, it is very effective for treating convulsion in ethnomedicine.
