Don't Eat These Foods If You Have Diabetes

Diabetes is a medical condition that has reached alarming proportions among adults and children in Nigeria.

When diabetes is not properly managed it could lead to blindness, nerve disease, heart disease and other potentially fatal complications.

People diagnosed with diabetes must make changes to their lifestyle and diet. Managing diabetes properly involves monitoring your blood glucose, exercising and eating a balanced diet.

If you have diabetes, in many ways your diet is your medicine. Doctors advise people with diabetes to eat foods that won't cause a spike in blood sugar and insulin.

Diabetic patients who eat the wrong foods are prone to inflammation, which increases their risk of disease.
This health tip lists 5 foods that people with prediabetes or diabetes should avoid.

1. Whole milk

Doctors advice moderating or eliminating whole milk from the diet; whole milk is high in saturated fat. A high intake of saturated fat usually leads to weight gain and eventually worsens insulin resistance.

2. Sweetened drinks

These include soft drinks, iced teas, and fruit punches. They are the worst drink choice for someone with diabetes.

Avoid sweetened drinks, they have little nutritional value and are simply loaded with sugar and calories.

3. Pasta, white rice, and White Bread

White bread and pasta (includes noodles, spaghetti, and macaroni) are high carbohydrates processed foods. They have been shown to significantly blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Replace these carbohydrates with brown rice, barley, and whole grain bread.

4. Flavored coffee drinks:

This includes cappuccinos or frappuccinos.
To keep your blood sugar level from spiking and avoiding gaining weight, drink plain coffee instead. Drinking coffee without additives has several health benefits including diabetes prevention.

5. Sweetened cereals

You should choose plain cereals with little or no sugar. Plain cereals contain at least 3 grams and less than 5 grams of sugar per serving.

You can sweeten plain cereals by adding fresh fruits like bananas.
